3AW began transmission in February 1932 as Melbourne s fifth commercial radio station.
The station is now broadcasting on 1278 kHz from a transmitter in the suburb of Lower Plenty and studios are located in South Melbourne, sharing facilities with sister station Magic 693. The program format is primarily news, talkback and Sport.
The station is owned and operated by Southern Cross Broadcasting and is the #1 rated AM radio radio station in Melbourne.

Each Morning from the break of dawn Ross Stevenson and John Burns present a light hearted breakfast show. From 8.30am award-winning journalist Neil Mitchell presents a fast-paced current affairs program, with lots of breaking news and caller discussion every morning. He is also well known for interviewing politicians regularly, particularly Federal Treasurer Peter Costello and Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. He is also known to interview John Howard from the affiliate radio studio in Canberra. After the 12 noon news Ernie Sigley Entertaining Melbourne afternoon program has regular guests and plenty of callers throughout the afternoon. His distinctive chuckle and all-round friendliness with all who appear on his show (including callers) are his trademarks. When 4pm strikes Derryn Hinch s controversial Drive show begins. Hosting the evening slot are TV pioneers Phillip Brady and Bruce Mansfield.
