Akamai Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Massachusetts, is a corporation that provides, among other services, global Internet content Cache.
Akamai is a Hawaiian language word meaning intelligent or clever. Beyond the name, the company has no ties with Hawaii.
Their customers include Yahoo!, Symantec, Microsoft, FedEx, Xerox, iVillage, Apple Computer, MTV and the United States Geological Survey.
The company was founded by a then–MIT graduate student, Daniel Lewin (along with applied math professor F. Thomson Leighton, who currently serves as Akamai s Chief Scientist). Lewin died at the age of 31 as a passenger on one of the flights that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
