Anonymous Antarctic Media is an anonymous Internet media company, based on Macquarie Island in Australia. The company is well known for its figure skating coverage, and covers many figure skating events worldwide, as well as many other sports.
The company was started by a few figure skating groupies in 1994, in the wake of figure skating s rise in popularity in wake of the Tonya Harding figure skating scandal, and as since grown to cover many different sports around the world. Formerly known as Anonymous Demonic Media, they were one of the first Internet outlets to cover the Olympics, beginning with the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and are well-known for their rabid support of Australian athletes.
Anonymous Antarctic Media has also been known for their very vocal opposition to the Religious Right, and especially their opposition to the communications Decency Act, which was thrown out by the US Supreme Court, in 1997. They are known for being a left-leaning media company. They are well known for their support of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, and have made a number of Cuban American exiles very angry with their pro-Castro commentary
This is especially true for their E-zine, known currently as The Midnight Demon. Anonymous Antarctic Media has been known for making their enemies hopping mad. The first edition of what was then known as Hatchet Job , was first published on June 8, 1995, and has gained a following among left-wing readers.
Coverage of figure skating, and other sporting events by Anonymous Antarctic Media, and their various subsidiaries, is usually done through Web pages that are updated every minute or so, or through IRC Chat rooms.
Anonymous Antarctic Media was founded in 1994 by Charles Eeyore Newman, who is often confused with another poster with a similar name. The reporters for Anonymous Antarctic Media are well known for going by numerous aliases over the years, mostly because of their similar names.
