BrettSpielWelt (short BSW) is a large and popular and entirely free Germany online gaming portal. It translates as Boardgame World and has online versions of over 50 popular classical and modern board games and card games such as Backgammon, Liar s Dice, Carcassonne (board game), Can t Stop, Go (board game), Lost Cities, Puerto Rico (game), Settlers of Catan, and Tichu.

Any common java-enabled browser suffices to play. Registering is not required to play. All major parts of the website are also available in the English language. The site is independent, non-commercial and ad-free, except for indirectly advertising the games themselves that are offered to play, of course. This is the reason why some board game publishers have presented brand new board games within the BrettSpielWelt already at their time of publication.

BrettSpielWelt also has a meta game for subscribers. Each game played earns experience points, credits and resources for the player. The meta game facilitates the building of smaller communities, set up as towns, to meet, chat and play. There are already various brettspielwelt communities that a player may join. As a player increases in rank and his or her virtual wealth increases, he or she may build a virtual home in the online world that includes games that will earn credits and resources for the community. Participation in the meta game is not required, and many players do not bother.

There is a large contingent of English BrettSpielWelt players, and several towns aimed primarily at English speakers, including Englishtown, Emerald City, Smallville and The.Great.White.North (Primarily aimed at Canadians), as well as the multi-lingual Whitechapel.
