Danked |
Danked, the past participle of dank , is used to refer to someone who replies to their own post on an online forum posing as another person (see Internet sock puppet) but forgetting to change their username. The poster s intention may be to bump the thread to a higher position on the page, or to create the illusion of consensus.
The term originated in the online forum of the MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW). The player of a level 14 character named Danks posted a message expressing his enjoyment of the new PvP (player vs player) Honor system, an innovative method of scoring PvP kills. For some reason (presumably to simulate popular support), he wanted to reply to his post as his alt (alternate character), so he changed his signature and replied; but he forgot to change his screen name to his alt, unintentionally making it obvious to readers that he was merely agreeing with himself.
To the other forumgoers, this was an act of stupidity meriting a name of its own, and because the hapless contributor s username was Danks, the term dank or danked emerged.
