Debian GNU/Hurd |
Debian GNU/Hurd is the Debian distribution of the GNU operating system with the GNU Hurd core (The GNU project s Unix-kernel (computer science)-replacement program—a set of servers or programs running on top of the GNU Mach microkernel ). Unlike most other GNU variants (that are shipped with the Linux kernel monolithic kernel) GNU/Hurd uses a microkernel architecture.
The Hurd is the core of the GNU operating system which implement file systems, network protocols, file access control, and other features that are today implemented by the Unix, Linux or other kernels. All operating systems (including MS Windows and Apple Mac) perform these functions.
It has been in development for some considerable time, but has not been released yet. Only half of the Debian software packages have been ported to GNU/Hurd and The Hurd itself is still under active development, not ready for use in a stable system. Most of Debian users today use stable distributions with Linux.
The GNU/Hurd operating system can be tried using a live CD available from Superunprivileged.org (See external links).
