Foundation 9 Entertainment

Foundation 9 Entertainment is an entertainment products developer. The company develops properties for multiple media, including video games for all platforms, comic books, film and television series. The company claims to be the largest independent video game developer in North America. Foundation 9 has 330 employees working in its studios in Emeryville, California, Vancouver, Canada, Boston, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, California, Newport Beach, California, Eugene, Oregon and Honolulu, Hawaii.

Foundation 9 has reached its present size through a number of strategic acquisitions. It owns 5 core brands and 7 separate studio locations, as well as a minority stake in a production management company. Its acquisitions include The Collective (Newport Beach), Backbone (Emeryville, Vancouver, Honolulu), Pipeworks (Eugene), ImaginEngine (Boston), Digital Eclipse (Emeryville, Vancouver) and Circle of Confusion (Los Angeles). For the most part, Foundation 9 allows each acquired entity to continue to operate their seperate studios.

By comparison, Electronic Arts (EA) is the overall largest video game developer in North America; as of 2004, it has around 4,800 employees. However, because EA is a video game publisher as well, they don t count as an independent developer.
