Free Radical Design is a video game developer based in Nottingham, England. Steve Ellis and David Doak left Rare at the end of 1998 to form the company. They were joined by Karl Hilton, Graeme Norgate and Lee Ray, and the company was up and running by April 1999. They are most famous for their TimeSplitters series of first-person shooter video games, which first appeared on the PlayStation 2 in 2000. Free Radical instantly attracted attention when it was started up as it was founded by mostly ex Rare (video game company) employees who had worked on the critically acclaimed FPS GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. The company is wholly owned by its founders.
