Hattrick

: See hat-trick for the generic term meaning

Hattrick is an Internet game, browser-based, football (soccer) management Internet game (massively multiplayer online game) based in Sweden.

Currently the community is made up of one hundred and two national League system and more than 600,000 managers and their Team from all over the world. There is a huge worldwide community built around the game, which collects statistics and talks about the game on message boards, for example.

After a short registration, the user receives a team. Nearly always, the Newbie takes over someone s old, defunct team, and the team s position in the league structure with an initial set of players, a weak coach (sport), a small stadium, fanclub, and many other features. After that, the player starts to manage his or her squad, sell and purchase the players, define a training scheme, and so forth. If the player is successful enough, he or she is granted promotion to a higher league the next four-Month-long season, sometimes by automatic promotion but more often via a playoff game with a team which came last in a league above it.

There is limited customization that a user can do to his or her team. The customization options include renaming the arena, changing the training type, or acquiring a new coach for training. As with any manager game, the player must assign positions to the players and some basic tactical options.

The game also offers the facility to join federations. A federation is designed to allow aligned Hattrick players to share newsletters and a message board. The 5 most popular federations at the moment (from user count), are the Scoring Trainers, Pie, non-league, hard-to-find, and dean gaffney federations. Federations talk about their chosen topics, and provide a place to talk about tactics away from the main forum boards. To be a member of a federation, users must sign up for a supporter package (below).

Hattrick is always under development, and the game developers are constantly adding new features to the game and enhancing the current ones. Although this is usually under heated debate in the game s conferences - a recurring topic is whether the top teams should be invited to a UEFA Champions League-style tournament, for example, but this has not yet been implemented.

Hattrick s leading leagues in terms of user numbers are Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina and Switzerland, although countries such as Poland, Denmark, Finland, Romania, Israel, Colombia and Germany are growing quickly.

Hattrick also has national teams, two for each country, an U20 and a senior team. Each season a World Cup is organized, rotated between one season for the U20 and one for the senior team. The first country to win an international trophy besides Sweden was Romania. So far, even countries with few users have qualified for the Hattrick World Cup. Ireland, a Hattrick nation of roughly 700 users have qualified for next season s World Cup in China.

The club of World Cup Winners has very few members until now: Sweden, Romania, Norway and Estonia. Sweden won the recent World Cup after beating Scotland 8-0 in the final, the Scots having surprisingly qualified through their very tactically skilled coach and breaks of luck but falling to the strongest team in the end.

There are many third party softwares available to help and enhance the user s gaming experience, although many users debate whether or not these detract from the skill of the game, such as match viewers and team administrators.

Users are also able to register for Hattrick supporter, which adds on features such as bookmarking players, uploading a team logo, making press announcements and choosing home and away team kits. It can be purchased for 3 months or 1 year. This add-on does not give any in-game advantages.

Hattrick has inspired a cricket game called Battrick that is based on similar principles and currently offers a 50-over ball-by-ball commentary for all league games. League games are played on a Friday. It is envisaged that multi-day games and international matches will be offered in future seasons. Hattrick also caused the creation of many other football manager games, like [http://www.givengo.com GiveNGo], [http://www.footiemanager.com FootieManager], and [http://www.freekick.org Freekick].
