Haynes Manuals

The Haynes Owners Workshop Manuals (commonly known as simply Haynes Manuals) are a series of practical manuals from the Haynes Publishing Group aimed at both the Do it yourself enthusiast and professional garage repairmen. Although the series primarily focuses upon the construction, maintenance, and repair of automotive vehicles, covering a wide range of makes, models, and years (300 models of car and 130 models of motorcycle); it also includes manuals for the construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of domestic appliances and personal computers; manuals on digital photography and model railways; and manuals on man, baby1, sex2, and woman3.

The automotive vehicle manuals are based upon the strip down and rebuild of the target vehicle, and comprise step-by-step instructions accompanied by diagrams and photographs of an actual rebuild. Additional manuals for garage professionals include books such as the Automotive Diesel Engine Service Guide , the Automotive Air Conditioning TechBook , Citroen and Peugeot Engine Management Systems , and two Engine Management and Fuel Injection Systems Pin Tables and Wiring Diagrams TechBook volumes.

Haynes manuals are published in 15 languages: English language (including American English and Australian English versions), French language, Swedish language, Chinese language, Japanese language, German language, Czech language, Finnish language, Polish language, Bulgarian language, Hebrew language, Greek language, Danish language, Spanish language (including American Spanish versions), and Russian language.

= History =

The Haynes manuals are named for John Haynes, Order of the British Empire. In 1956, when he was at school, he wrote and published a book on building an Austin 7 Special, and wrote two further books whilst performing national service in the Royal Air Force. Haynes Publishing was founded in 1960 and the first manual actually entitled Haynes Owners Workshop Manual , for the Austin Healey Sprite, was published in 1965.

= How Haynes manuals are written =

Haynes manuals are written by a pair of authors, and take between 20 and 30 man-weeks. A car or motorcycle is bought at the beginning of the project and sold at the end. Although the workshop phase of the project usually lasts for roughly 4 weeks, the vehicle is usually retained until the manual is in print.
