Internet Light

Internet Light is a transport layer communication protocol designed at Bell Labs for the 9P protocol in Plan 9 (operating system). It is assigned the IP protocol number of 40. It is similar to Transmission Control Protocol but much more simple, and unsuitable for use over the Internet because it lacks congestion control, among other things. IL is not used any more.

Internet Light s main features are:

  • Reliable datagram service
  • In-sequence delivery
  • Internetworking using IP
  • Low complexity, high performance
  • Adaptive timeouts
