Irem Corporation (アイレム) was a Japan arcade game developer and manufacturer. Irem Corporation was founded in 1974 under the name IPM and released their first arcade game in 1978. In 1979, IPM changed its name to Irem, an acronym for ( Innovation in Recreational Electronic Media ). They are probably best known for the famous scrolling shooter R-Type . They have been a popular developer in Japan with games like Photoboy for the PC-Engine and In the Hunt for the Sega Saturn.
On April 15, 1997 Irem Software Engineering was founded, and took over management of Irem Corporation in July of that year.
Several workers of Irem left and formed Nazca Corporation (The name has vanished and become part of SNK Playmore), the team who designed Metal Slug series.
