Jerry Chih-Yuan Yang () (born November 61968) is the Taiwanese American-American co-founder, Chief Yahoo and Director of Yahoo! Inc. In 2003 his net worth was US$1.28 billion.
Born in Taipei, Republic of China, Yang moved to San Jose, California when aged ten, with his single mother (Lily) and younger brother (Ken). His father had died when Yang was two. He claimed that despite his mother being an English language teacher, he only knew one English word on his arrival. Mastering the English language in only three years, he was soon placed into an Advanced Placement Program English class.
Yang received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Yang was recently named to the Stanford Board of Trustees. He co-created the Yahoo! Internet navigational guide in April 1994 with David Filo and co-founded Yahoo! Inc. in April 1995. Yang married Akiko Yamazaki, a Japanese American raised in Costa Rica. She is an anthroplogist.
In 2005, Yahoo was criticized for identifying Chinese dissident journalist Shi Tao to Chinese authorities, resulting in his receiving a 10 year jail sentence. Yang commented that To be doing business in China, or anywhere else in the world, we have to comply with local law. Whether Yahoo was, in fact, legally obligated to reveal the information is a matter of dispute.
