Joseph Goguen |
Professor Joseph Goguen is a computer science in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, USA. He is author of A Categorical Manifesto and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Consciousness Studies.
Joseph Goguen was educated at Harvard University (Bachelor s degree) and University of California, Berkeley (PhD). He has previously worked at SRI International in Menlo Park, California and then as a professor at the Oxford University Computing Laboratory (1988–1996) where he was also a Fellow at St. Anne s College, Oxford. Goguen s research interests include work in category theory (a branch of mathematics), software engineering, user interface design, and the sociology and ethics aspects of science and technology. He also studies the philosophy of computation and information, formal methods (especially hidden algebra and theorem proving), Institution (computer science) (a formalization of the notion of a logical system) and object, relation (mathematics) and functional programming, and their combinations.
A major contribution has been his influence in the development of the OBJ family of languages and associated tools.
