List of technologies in Civilization III

The List of Technologies in Civilization III is a set of many and myriad Civilization Advances available to a player in Civilization III, reflecting developments in human science and society. These are divided into the Ancient, Middle, Industrial, and Modern Ages, with a majority of technologies in the current age required before research on technologies in the next age can begin. That is, a player must research nearly all of the advances in the Ancient Age before any of the Middle Ages advances become available. Civilization Advances can allow construction of new units, city improvements, or wonders, as well as worker actions, forms of government, and access to new Civilization Advances.

===Ancient Times===

====Bronze====

With the advent of bronze, Spearman are available and become the best defensive unit in the Ancient Times. The Zulu Nation further studies this science and uses a quick unit, the Impi. Greece does similarly and results in the Hoplite. This science also enables a coastal city to make a Great Wonder, the Colossus of Rhodes. This science leads to iron.

====Masonry====

With masonry, a nation can relocate its capital by constructing a new Palace. Also, for defensive purposes, walls can be constructed. The Great Pyramids become available to build, adding a granary to each city. Scientists further studies into how and where to place block more efficiently, lead to mathematics.

====Linguistics====

Studied by linguists for faster communication, the Linguistics leads to mathematics and writing.

====Pottery====

To store food more efficiently, pottery was discovered by farmers. Therefore, farmers put all the pottery filled with food in granary allowing cities to grow faster. Storing food for extended periods of times also enables sea travel, and thus the need for cartography.

====Wheel====

The wheel helps to speed up units. If horses are available, it allows production of the chariot, a fast unit, although difficult terrain can put restrictions on its travel without accompanying roads. Egyptians specialize in this science and have Chariot#Egyptians. This advance also enables Equestrianism.

====Warrior#Warrior Code====

Organization of warriors results in better units and a common Warrior#Warrior Code. Archers can be used after the study of the warrior code. Babylonians specialize in this and train more powerful bowman.

====Afterlife====

As people started to look around themselves, they searched for a meaning of life. Their study of Afterlife was the first form of religion. This inspires the construction of temples, which enriched culture and help to content the populace. This science also enables mysticism.

====Writing====

Influenced by the Linguistics, writing allows the establishment of embassy and permits the research of Law, Literature, Cartography, and Philosophy. Civilizations can also make military alliance and territory agreements.

====Mathematics====

The Linguistics inspired early education, and masonry required more precision; together, the two formed the early origins of mathematics. This results in the development of the catapult as an artillery weapon. Construction and currency are enabled by this science.

====Mysticism====

A refinement upon Afterlife, mysticism allows the construction of The Oracle to double the population contenting effects of temples in each city. More research in this area leads to polytheism.

====Iron====

As early metal workers saw the success of bronze, their endeavors led to the discovery of Iron. With this, the civilization can obtain iron in hills and mountains. This advance allows civilizations to produce the Swordsman, an excellent offensive unit with the same defensive power as a spearman, provided it has access to iron. The Persian Empirens and Roman Empires produce Persian Immortalss and legionary respectively, which are improved versions of the swordsmen.

====Philosophy====

Enabled by writing, philosophy can lead to the republic. In addition, inspired by its new-found love of knowledge, the first civilization to research philosophy receives one free civilization scientific technology.

====Law====

To promote order within the civilization, the Law is developed. This philosophy enables the civilization to build Courthouse to reduce political corruption within cities, as well as increase resistance to propaganda operations by enemy spy. Law allows research of the republic.

====Literature====

Writing became an art to Authors, and as a result, literature became a science. It allows the construction of library in cities, which produce culture and increase scientific output. A civilization can also build the Library of Alexandria, which instantly grants two scientific technologies known by other civilizations. Literature is not required to advance to the Middle Ages.

====Cartography====

With the ability to store food for a extended period of time as a result of pottery, as well as the ability to Writing, Cartography can be researched. This science permits construction of the first marine unit, the galley. Harbors can be built to produce veteran galleys and increase the gathering of food from the coast and sea. Cartography also enables the civilization to build the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which can enable sea units to travel more quickly.

====Equestrianism====

Equestrianism is a militaristic science, enabled by the wheel and the Warrior#Warrior Code. Now, with access to horses, a civilization can produce Cavalry#Origins for use as fast offensive units. The Iroquois specialize in this and can produce Colonial Spanishs.

====Polytheism====

As religious idolatry and paganism grew, polytheism became the basis of religion. Multi-god religions derived from mysticism and enabled monarchy.

====Construction====

Mathematics made possible a great number of refinements and precision to Architecture and enabled Construction. As a result, cities can build Aqueduct to expand cities growth potential, as well as Stadium to entertain and divert the masses and strenghten culture. Outside of cities, workers can construct fortresses to hold key defensive positions, and even the Great Wall of China to greatly improve city defense, especially against raiding barbarians.

====Currency====

As trade prospered and as money became used more, the need for a more easily portable material to represent value arose. In stepped currency, and the convenience it provides allows cities to build Marketplace to increase both taxes from trade, and the availability of luxury to citizens.

====Republic====

With the concept of a Law to ensure justice within the state, philosophers and early politicians began to explore the idea of a republic, where citizens election their own prime minister. The technology allows a civilization to choose a republic as its form of government, allowing a great degree of personal freedom, resulting in a substantial economy boost. (However, during the time of the revolution, national government would be anarchy, since there is no government and the fact that citizens may do as they like and not get into conflict with authority.) At the same time, prime minister must contend with the new-found freedom to express dissatisfaction with the government, especially during times of war. The republic is an optional advance, and not needed to advance to the Middle Ages.

====Monarchy====

Exploration of the concept of religion began to suggest that the king might hold power by divine right, which evolved into a monarchy. Using this as a basis for government rather than control of the military, as under the default government, Despotism, this grants a greater extent of freedom and this is reflected by improvements in the civilization s production and economy, as well as a reduction of corruption and waste inspired by loyalty to the monarch. Monarchy does not need to be researched for a civilization to reach the Middle Ages. Furthermore, monarchy enables the building the Hanging Gardens.

===Middle Ages===

====Monotheism====

Further study into religion prompted the development of monotheism, belief in one deity. This advance allows cities to construct Cathedral, which helped to reduce unhappiness and strengthen culture. More research in this area can lead to theology and chivalry.

====Feudalism====

A refinement upon monarchy, feudalism is the system of trading service, military, or labor, to one s superior social class in return for land, even if only to work on, and protection. This civilization advance inspires the creation of The Art of War, allowing all of a civilization s cities on one continent to train veteran ground units, as well as the development of pikemen, very effective defensive troops. Developing this concept allows access to chivalry and Invention.

====Engineering====

Engineering represents a widespread application of the civilization s developed science and mathematics. As a result, workers have developed the ability to plant forests on any land landform except mountains, hills, deserts, and flood plains and the roads they construct easily bridge over rivers. This advance leads to the Invention.

====Chivalry====

Servants of the monarch that held power granted by a deity, the noble of the warrior caste began to develop a way of life revolving around their special position in the feudal system, called chivalry. This leads to the availability of Knight as fast and mobile cavalry units, although the Japanese, China, and Indians build specialized versions of knights, samurai, History of China#Qing Dynasty and war elephants, respectively. Chivalry is an optional advance and not needed to reach the Industrial Age.

====Invention====

With the advent of Engineering, technology began to more often manifest itself in the world in the form of practical devices, Inventions. Very often, these devices made their way to the battlefield, such as the longbow, which makes a powerful offensive weapon. The civilization can also sponsor Leonardo da Vinci to help provide outdated military units with modern equipment at a cheaper cost.

====Theology====

====Education====

====Gunpowder====

====Printing press====

====Music Theory====

====Democracy====

The Democracy advance allows a civilization to convert to a democracy government. This government will greatly increase the civilization s commerse and lower curruption; however, with their newfound freedoms, citizens can more openly express discontent, especially during war, leading to unhappiness due to war weariness.

====Performing arts====

Performing arts is the a dead-end technology, a technology that does not contribute to another technology, that allows the creation of Shakespeare, a Great Wonder that makes a percentage of the population in the building city content.

====Banking====

====Astronomy====

====Chemistry====

====Metallurgy====

====Economics====

====Navigation====

====Physics====

====Gravity====

====Magnetism====

====Military academy====
