Logical Volume Manager (Linux)

LVM is an implementation of a logical volume management for the Linux kernel (computer science). It was originally written in 1998 by Heinz Mauelshagen, who based its design on that of the Veritas Volume Manager in HP-UX.

LVM includes most of the features expected of a volume manager, including:

  • Online resizing of VGs
  • Online resizing of LVs
  • Read-only Snapshot (computer storage)
  • redundant array of inexpensive disks#RAID_0 striping of LVs.
  • LVM does not implement redundant array of inexpensive disks#RAID_1 or redundant array of inexpensive disks#RAID_5 mirroring of LVs. Instead, Sistina recommends using the Linux software RAID driver to mirror the underlying PVs to achieve redundancy.
