Macromedia HomeSite

HomeSite is a HTML editor currently owned by Macromedia. HomeSite isn t a WYSIWYG HTML editor like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver, more a handcoder s tool. It is only available for the Microsoft Windows platform at currently 99 US Dollars.

=History=

It was originally developed in 1995 by Bradbury Software (founded by Nick Bradbury). In March 1997 Allaire Corp. from Cambridge, Massachusetts (founded by Jeremy and his brother J.J. Allaire) acquired HomeSite and Nick Bradbury joined Allaire. After leaving Allaire in 1998, Nick continued to work on the CSS/xHTML editor TopStyle and the RSS (protocol) reader FeedDemon. Macromedia acquired Allaire in 2001. Some dedicated HomeSite users have criticised Macromedia for neglecting the tool in favor of the more expensive Dreamweaver editor. Now that Adobe has bought Macromedia its future has been questioned even more.

=Versions=

*Allaire HomeSite 3.0 (November 1997) *Allaire HomeSite 4.0 (November 1998) *Macromedia HomeSite 5.0 (2001) *Macromedia HomeSite 5.5 (September 2003)

There is also another version called HomeSite+ which is included in Dreamweaver MX 2004. HomeSite+ has additional functionality for application development.

=Features=

*Customizable interface that includes dockable toolbars, tag snippets, and custom dialogs written in the VTML language. *Customizable colour coding for PHP, JavaScript, ASP, Perl, SQL, and DHTML *Available in French and German *A lot of keyboard shortcuts
