In computer science, the term nanokernel can refer to different concepts:
an operating system s kernel (computer science) that is even smaller than a kernel (computer science)#Microkernels,
the lowest-level part of the system software for PowerPC processor-based Apple Macintosh computers.
More generally, a nanokernel is so small that even some basic hardware controller (computing)s aren t managed by the core kernel. For example, the Programmable Interrupt Controller or the timer are considered as devices and managed externally.
