NaviServer

NaviServer is a high performance web server written in C and Tcl. It can be easily extended in either language to create interesting web sites and services.

NaviServer is based on AOLserver, AOLs Open Source webserver. The NaviServer project started as a fork (software development) of the AOLserver project. It is different in that it wants the various decision-making processes to be more open and transparent.

Historically NaviServer was the original name of the server. The creator of the software, a company called NaviSoft, was bought from AOL in 1995.

The project is under active development, hosted on SourceForge.

Some new features in contrast to AOLserver are:

  • an internal watchdog for automatic server restarts
  • starting the server into a command line mode
  • logging all server configuration parameters to the logfile
  • virtual mass hosting
  • usage of the TCL virtual filesystem
  • HTTP range requests for streaming and resumption of downloads
