pcHDTV, Inc. is a computer hardware company that makes PCI cards to allow personal computers to receive broadcasts made with the United States digital television standard, ATSC. Based in Sandy, Utah, pcHDTV has focused on the Linux market and uses open source device drivers. The company has made two TV cards so far, the HD-2000 and the HD-3000. Both can receive standard analog NTSC broadcasts in addition to digital transmissions, and neither one blocks content based on presence of the broadcast flag.
Originally neither card worked with digital cable systems in the U.S., because most cable providers use DVB or a DVB-like transmission system for carrying digital content. Somewhat confusingly, driver development as of mid-2005 is largely focused on integrating the pcHDTV drivers into the Linux kernel using the DVB application programming interface (API). This will make the cards compatible with DVB viewing and recording software, but not with the DVB transmission system.
The DVB driver (not to be confused with DVB video) development is finished, and works well. When using the DVB interface the card supports both ATSC (Over-the-air) and Quadrature_amplitude_modulation (Cable_television) broadcasts. This is done by loading appropriate firmware on the fly when the card mode is switched.
