=Misclasification of CDPs=

::Turn off the bot. It has miscategorized 11:46, Nov 15, 2004 (UTC) :::It is alo very annoying to see articles with CDP right in the title being categorized as towns. Very sloppy. THE BOT SHOULD BE TURNED OFF IMMEDIATELY!!! 12:08, Nov 15, 2004 (UTC)

I have prepared a fix for articles which have CDP in the title but which say in the body that they are towns. Please see . I have removed any articles with CDP in the title from the list of articles left to categorize, as well.

As for articles which have been edited to more say census-designated place instead of town, only those so edited after September 24, 2004 would be improperly classified. I will prepare a list based on a more recent database dump, and post it to the above page shortly, and will make sure these get fixed promptly. There is a proposal on 06:35, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

:I have completed an automated scan for all articles edited between 24 Sep 2004 and 06 Nov 2004, where the words census and designated have appeared in the first 500 characters. This turned up three or four CDPs improperly categorized as towns, but properly identified in the body text, and I fixed them manually. I will do the same for 06-15 Nov as soon after the latest database dump is finished being analyzed by Pearle. -- 07:12, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

:Ah, as it happens, after reading recent discussion on WP:CFD, I was inspired to fix exactly this problem. I recently finished re-writing the category-moving code so now it does this kind of remove-add in one edit instead of two, as requested. There should be a bunch of edits from today demonstrating this in action. :I also added some more sophisticated code to avoid overloading Wikipedia servers with edits; if HTTP POSTs are too slow, it will put the bot to sleep for a little while, and if POSTs fail, it will sleep for 1, 10, and 60 minutes (in sequence) before retrying.-- 06:30, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)

:Could you point to a particular problematic example There are some timing issues - I first move articles and subcategories for a bunch of cases, then I move the body text over in a second run, which links the new categories into the larger hierarchy. The bot didn t seem to have any authority for what it was doing when I looked at CfD. However, I ve looked through the history, and see why it s doing what it s doing, now. It might have been preferable to leave the section on the page, with a note, until the activities had been completed.

I also think it would have been better to put the category structure in place first, rather than relying on the bot. I notice that someone else has done a couple of edits to try and tidy things up. I fear I may have caused more harm than good in my attempts to set things right.

:OK, in the future I will run TRANSFER_TEXT_ACTUALLY before MOVE_CONTENTS. :Sorry about that; there were a few bugs in the code, one of which was exposed when I accidentally ran the bot twice on the same articles. (It shouldn t have changed anything the second time.) An extra copy of the interlanguage comment got added as a result, and then removed on the third (and hopefully final) pass. I ll move the detailed description of what is happening to Pearle s user page, which may help people figure out what s going on. Pearle is also finding articles with complete duplicated sections, including interwiki links and categories. Since I ve now found (and corrected) two such articles, I wonder if it would be worth putting in an algorithm to detect that. Certainly a category ordering error is a good indication, and the number of horizontal lines would also be an excellent input. But that s outside the scope of what I m doing. I wouldn t trust an algorithm to tag articles properly without human review. So flagged for manual review seems like the right thing to do. Actually, I m not sure what the best way to fix them is myself. I ve so far left them alone. The last item are articles where entire sections are duplicated, such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.phptitle=Horse&diff=11063965&oldid=11062990] and the previous edit. I believe a edit conflict / section editing bug causes this. Detecting these should be easy--just look for duplicated section headers, and then do a verbatim text comparison from there. If the whole section is identical, the bot can delete one copy safely. If not, but it is substantially similar, tagging would be helpful for manual repair. At the very least, you could remove duplicate interlanguage/category links before you mangle them and make it dififcult to compare them for identicalness.
