People Telecom, formerly under the name of Swiftel Communications, was started in 2000 by Ryan O Hare and Colin Marland and is one of Australia s largest telecommunication service and Internet access providers.

People Telecom has been embroiled in legal problems over copyright-violating BitTorrent sites distributing pirated music that have been operated and maintained by the company. Music watchdog groups in Australia brought a lawsuit against the company in October of 2005 to debate copyright violations. People Telecom have decided upon an out-of-court settlement to be negotiated no order to costs between the groups and the company. The settlement terms have been kept strictly confidential, but are understood to be significantly less then the overall cost of the litigation, which could have been in the order of $500,000 to $600,000 Australian dollars.
