Rakuten, Inc. (楽天株式会社) is one of the biggest operators of Online shop malls in Japan. In October, 2004, it announced it was planning to set up a professional baseball team [http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/news/archive/200410/13/20041013p2a00m0sp006000c.html]. The new team is called Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. The chief executive officer is Hiroshi Mikitani.
In October 2005, Rakuten shocked the business world by buying a 15.46% stake in Tokyo Broadcasting System (it now has over 19%) & is now attempting to do a hostile takeover of the Japanese broadcast company.
