SYN FM |
SYN (the Student and Youth Network) is a community radio station in Melbourne, Australia. Formed in 2000 from the merger of 3TD and SRA (a high school radio station and the radio station of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), it is currently the only radio station in the world run entirely by people aged under 26. From all aspects of production, to office administration, talent sourcing and technical support, none of the staff are aged above 26.
SYN itself is expanding to be more of a multimedia organisation, with over 10 hours of television per week, a website, and a periodical magazine complimenting the broadcast media. It was granted a full time broadcasting licence in 2003 on the guarantee that over 50% of the music played is locally produced, and that 50% of the announcers are under the age of 18.
The station has won numerous broadcasting awards and awards in industry innovation for its fresh approach to getting youth and youth issues on the air.
