Scribus

Scribus is a desktop publishing (DTP) application primarily for Linux and Unix desktop users, although Apple Mac OS X native and Fink/X11, and Microsoft Windows native and via Cygwin versions exist (the missing MinGW version is welcome). Example uses include club newsletters, small newspaper production and animated interactive PDF presentations. Other uses include creating corporate stationery, brochures, small posters, and other documents which require flexible layout and/or the ability to output to professional quality image-setting equipment. Scribus has even been used to produce full scale books.

Scribus is similar to Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign, except that it is free software published under the GNU GNU General Public License.

Scribus supports many major graphic formats in addition to Scalable Vector Graphics. Other features include support of CMYK color model colors, International Color Consortium color management and scripting using Python programming language. Scribus is available in more than 24 languages.

Printing is done via its own internal level 3 PostScript driver, including support for font embedding and sub-setting with TrueType, Type_1_font#Font_handling and OpenType fonts. The internal driver fully supports Level 2 PostScript constructs and very large set of Level 3.

Portable Document Format support includes transparency, encryption and a large set of the PDF 1.4 spec including interactive PDF s form fields, annotations and bookmarks.

The file format is based on XML and is fully documented and supports the OpenDocument format standard.
