SpamCop

SpamCop is a free E-mail spam reporting service, allowing recipients of unsolicited bulk email (UBE) to report the offence to the sender s Internet Service Provider (ISP), and sometimes their web host. They also offer spam-filtered email accounts (for a fee), a DNSBL called the SCBL , tools for ISPs to monitor reports, and forums for discussing these services.

Like other DNSBLs, SpamCop s SCBL is controversial. SCBL criticism primarily comes from those who have failed to prevent abuse of their IP address, and as a result it gets listed, and their mail doesn t get through. So-called innocent third parties can become blacklist due to reports that incriminate their server or IP address. If alerted, SpamCop will correct incorrect listings.

= History =

SpamCop was founded in 1998 and began as an individual effort. As the reporting service became more popular, the SCBL became more useful. It has commonly been the target of DDoS attacks and lawsuits from organizations listed in the SCBL. Email security company IronPort purchased SpamCop, but it remains independently run by founder Julian Haight.
