Stellarium

Stellarium is a free software planetarium, licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, available for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It uses OpenGL to render a supposedly realistic 3D computer graphics sky in real time. With Stellarium , it s possible to see what one can see with the naked eye, binoculars or a small telescope.

Stellarium is developed by the France programmer Fabien Chéreau, who launched the project in the summer of 2001.

Features include:

  • Over 120,000 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue.
  • All the solar system s planets and their major moons.
  • Panorama landscapes, fog, Earth s atmosphere and supposedly realistic sunsets, sunrises and eclipses.
  • Standard perspective and wide angle (fish eye) projection modes.
