Lunar Linux (or Lunar for short) is a source code based Linux distribution. is built entirely by compiling source code, using custom Optimization (computer_science).

Lunar installs a complete generically optimized Bootstrap#Computing development when first installed. After rebooting, the user can build packages custom optimized to their system by using the Lunar Package management system to download, compile, and install the software.

The user can also optionally rebuild the entire system to acheive a fully optimized system tailored toward the user s specific needs. This should result in a lean and optimized operating system. However, on the downside, compiling a whole distribution from scratch may be time-consuming.

Users may also periodically, either by hand or in a Crontab, run commands that will refresh their package list and/or automatically upgrade any old packages on their system to keep them up to date.

Lunar has a package system similar to that of

Currently, Lunar only supports the x86 architecture, however support for Sparc and IA-64 is being worked on.

Other source based Linux distributions include Gentoo Linux, Linux From Scratch, and Onebase Linux. Lunar Linux itself Fork (software) from Sorcerer GNU/Linux.
