Television networks in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, there are several broadcast companies. There is the public television and the commercial television, which first started broadcasting from Luxembourg.

The public television, supported by the government, has four channels. Nederland 1, Nederland 2, Nederland 3 and the newest Nederland 4 (which is only available for internet users). Public television in meant to produce programs with a cultural value. These stations can only make a fixed maximum amount of money from commercials known as Ster . Recently a new website has been created that contains almost all broadcasts from these 3 broadcasting stations online. These can be viewed for free.

There are three major nationwide commercial television companies, each with one or more channels:

RTL Nederland (part of RTL Group):

  • RTL 4
  • RTL 5
  • RTL 7
  • SBS Broadcasting Group:

  • SBS 6
  • NET 5
  • Veronica (tv)
  • Talpa:

  • Talpa (television channel)
  • Talpa started broadcasting on the 12 August 2005. Talpa is Latin for mole , mol in Dutch language. Talpa was established by John de Mol, a Dutch multi-billionaire. Talpa has the television rights for the Eredivisie (Dutch Premier League).
