The West Australian

The West Australian (often simply called The West ) is Western Australia s only daily newspaper, and is owned by Australian Stock Exchange-listed West Australian Newspapers Limited . It has been published in Western Australia since 1833, and currently has a weekday circulation of 220,000, and a weekend circulation of 390,000 with its Saturday edition, which is claimed to be read by over a million people.

Newspaper history in Western Australia shows that The West is a survivor, where other papers have disappeared over time. A good example is the afternoon newspaper The Daily News , which met its demise in the 1980s.

The newspaper had a relative balance of international, national and local news prior to the changes brought about by television, the internet and local throw-away or free community based newspapers.

As is traditional with Western Australian newspapers, The West is published in tabloid format, like the state s other newspaper, The Sunday Times the News Limited local production.

Contemporary columnists of The West Australian include Paul Murray (previously an Editor of the newspaper) and Danny Katz.

Australian Labor Party figures, such as Geoff Gallop and Bob Hawke have claimed the newspaper is heavily biased towards conservative parties. However, it should be noted that many such comments were made during the lead-up to the 2005 state election.
