Ultimate Logging System Professional

ULSP, Ultimate Logging System Professional, is a Xanga visitor logger, or so-called tracker.

=Information that ULSP logs=

  • Xanga ID
  • Country
  • Internet Service Provider
  • IP Address
  • Total visit count (only in the Summary View)
  • Per-day visit count (only in the Summary View)
  • Page visted
  • Page referred
  • User agent
  • =Features=

    ==Logs those sign-out==

    As reported, ULSP is able to log the username of the Xanga owners even when they have signed out. It is believed that it makes use of a cookie to store the username, which the normal Logout button of Xanga couldn t effectively remove.

    This feature is also seen on other trackers, like xTracker [http://www.xtracker.us] , and is described as Intelligent Recognition .

    The feature that is described above is most likely using the cookie named u generated by xanga.com and possibly the GUID cookie. By collecting a given number of user ids and tracking multiple xanga sites, it is possible to infer whose user id belongs to what username.

    ==More precise==

    It is said (in its official page) that all ULSP sites will help each other in recognizing Xanga users, and is called Cooperation Mechanism .

    It is tested and succeeded that while a user which initially is unrecognized later visit a site with his identify revealed, the previous site is able to update its record. However there is no clue how it works, nor how it will fail. More tests can be carried out on this.

    ==No sign-up, configuration needed==

    ULSP does not require any configuration or register process. It will automatically detect the current user status and determine by itself what information to show. Although this seems handy, there are reports that ULSP has displayed wrong information, like displaying the statistics of other users. Some of these reports were later proved to be the fault of the browser s cache.

    ==Secure==

    It is tested that ULSP uses its own cookie to identify the login status of a user. The cookie is encrypted, and so it is not likely to be possible to be cracked.

    Some other trackers, like the XASM, has a public tracker report, so that everyone will be able to access so. Only those who care a lot about the privacy of their reports should take this feature seriously.

    =Charges=

    The author intended to charge a monthly fee of HK$5 for his ULSP. Users can choose freely whether to pay or not. Those who chose not to pay will have their functionality of ULSP reduced:

  • Statistics Summary View no longer available
  • Individual Visits View displays only the oldest 50 visitors.
  • Users can only delete the whole bunch of information at a time, i.e. cannot select several lines and delete
  • There is actually a trick to overcome these limitation for small (i.e. low traffic) Xanga sites. One will only need to reset their statistics everytime when the number of records reaches 50. Many Xanga sites do not have 50 visits everyday. So reseting the statistics every night before they went to bed will grant them unlimited statistics display. The author leaves the Reset All button available, and so this act is believed to be not violating regulations.

    =Disputes=

    Over months, there are several complaints by users (Offical name: victims) of ULSP. One significant was the disputes between the author ewcy and bernardtse.

    Bernard (and actually many other users) claims that the IP Address, and the Xanga username is privacy, and should not be revealed. Some others were annoyed with their referrer page (HTTP Referrer) being logged, such that some Private Xanga sites were made public.

    Ewcy (and some ULSP-supporting users) claims that all information logged, including IP Address, HTTP Referrer, is part of the HTTP Protocol, and were all originally known to public. He argue that people who complain just got used to not knowing how HTTP works, and ULSP just taught them a lesson, and has done nothing wrong.

    The arugment lasted for around three days, and Bernard seemd not interested in continuing with this matter. There is no conclusion on who is right and who is wrong. Users considering installing ULSP should make the decision themselves.
