XPostFacto

XPostFacto is an Open source utility that enables the installation of versions of Mac OS X on some Apple Macintosh systems that are not officially supported for them by Apple Computer. It enables a user to install early versions of OS X on some pre-G3 PowerPC-based Macs which were never supported by Apple for this operating system (sometimes with incomplete functionality), and to install more recent versions of OS X on hardware which was supported for earlier versions of OS X. For example, it can install Mac OS X v10.2 on a Power Macintosh 8600, or Mac OS X v10.3 on a beige PowerMac G3. This software engineering is made possible by the publication of the source code for Darwin (operating system), the open-source foundation of OS X.

The name is a play on ex post facto , a Latin phrase meaning after the fact and commonly used in legal matters to refer to retroactive actions applying a later state of affairs (such as legislation) to earlier situations. In this context, it refers to the installation of software which did not exist yet at the time the hardware was manufactured.
