gedit is an Open source, small UTF-8 compatible text editor for the GNOME desktop environment.

Designed for the X Window System (XFree86), it uses the GTK 2.0 and GNOME 2.0 library (computer science). Complete GNOME integration is featured, with support for drag and drop between Nautilus_file_manager (the GNOME file manager); and the use of the GNOME help system, GNOME Virtual File System, and computer printer framework. It features syntax highlighting and tabs for editing multiple files.

Recently, a new program called GPHPedit has been created, based off gEdit. It is designed for PHP and HTML text editing.
