MicroSD

microSD (formerly TransFlash) is an ultra-compact (as of 2005 the world s smallest) flash RAM memory card format.

microSD cards are 11 mm x 15 mm x 1 mm thickroughly the size of a fingernailand are intended for use in small devices like mobile phones and portable audio players. microSD cards are usable in Secure Digital Card-compatible devices via an adapter. microSD cards come in capacities ranging from 16 to 512 megabytes. SanDisk plans to release a 1-GB model by the end of 2005 and a 2-GB model in 2006. The format is currently supported primarily by mobile phone manufacturers, including Kyocera, Motorola and Samsung.

The microSD format was originally created by SanDisk. It was originally called T-Flash and then TransFlash before being rechristened microSD when adopted by the SD Card Association (SDA). Other flash card formats approved by the SDA include miniSD and Secure Digital Card.
